Every drawer in the house held pairs of glasses. My old man sold eyewear by visiting each optician shop in The Netherlands. No kidding, all of them. In 50% of my childhood pictures, I'm wearing frames while there was nothing wrong with my eyesight.
My father always had problems sourcing from China. Something I always attributed to cultural misunderstandings. Our debates at home made me decide to live in China and learn the language. And of course, to prove a point! China just hosted The Beijing Olympics and had this incredible momentum. I fell in love with the country and its studious and diligent people.
A couple of years later, I wanted to work in eyewear back home, so I did. I was in charge of design and production for a cool start-up selling prescription frames. I spent seven years flying in and out of China, establishing my knowledge about the design & production of everything related to eyewear.
Now it's time to start the label MERCURY. I work closely with a small group of friends whom I've known for almost a decade. Jokingly we call ourselves 眼镜狗 (yânjìnggôu) Eyewear Dogs. The label brings you iconic handcrafted eyewear. Our sunglasses will last multiple seasons.
In short, MERCURY provides a bridge between you, a quality-conscious consumer from Europe, and where we produce ethically and economically in China.
